Spring is here, and there is no better time to go out and experience the beauty of nature as growth returns from Winter. However, along with the blooming flowers and trees often come stuffy noses and pressure headaches, sometimes followed by dreaded sinus infections. But what exactly is a sinus infection, and how can you prevent it?

A sinus is a hollow air filled cavity in the skull that is connected to the nasal airway by a narrow hole in the bone. A person has four pairs of sinuses: two in the forehead, two behind the cheeks, two between the eyes, and two further between the eyes. Normally these sinuses are open to the nasal airway, but occasionally the narrow holes that connect the sinuses become swollen due to a variety of factors from seasonal allergies to cigarette smoke. Swelling can lead to discomfort, and due to restricted airway movement, can provide a good environment for bacteria or viruses to grow within the sinuses.

Symptoms of a sinus infection can typically include headache, facial tenderness, fever, stuffiness, sore throat, and cough. Since sinus infections can range in cause as well as severity, it is important to seek medical assistance to properly diagnose the problem.

Additionally, if sinus infections occur seasonally along with allergies, treatment of the allergies may help prevent the infection from beginning.
